What is meant by “broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it” (Matthew 7:13–14)?

J esus was close to the end of His earthly life when He preached these words in the Sermon on the Mount. He was reminding His followers to turn their backs on sinful, self-centered ways of living and to start living in complete submission to Him. Jesus warned, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). This is hard for us to do—in fact, it’s impossible without the help of the Holy Spirit.
